This photograph of Pebble Beach in California is my most successful image because of how the diffuse lighting creates a soft, balanced tone across the entire scene. The overcast sky acted like a natural lightbox, eliminating harsh shadows and allowing the textures of the rocks, sand, and water to come through in a very natural and subtle way. The monochromatic palette, with its layered grays and muted whites, adds a moody, minimalist feel that fits the coastal environment and enhances the quiet, peaceful atmosphere of the beach.

Most challenging aspect of this assignment:

The hardest part was working with the low contrast that comes with diffuse lighting and monochromatic scenes. Without bold shadows or pops of color, I had to rely more on composition—leading lines, texture, and framing—to make the image visually strong. Capturing enough depth and separation between elements like the shoreline, rocks, and sea spray was tricky but crucial to avoid a flat-looking image.

What I’ll do in the future to create stronger images:

Going forward, I’ll pay closer attention to how lighting direction and surface textures interact, especially in soft light. I also want to experiment more with foreground elements to add depth and scale when shooting landscapes. Additionally, I’ll be more intentional about using monochromatic tones to enhance emotion, and consider using tools like polarizers or post-processing contrast curves to bring out more structure in soft-light conditions.

I love this photo because it didn't seem like a familiar place to me at first, almost like a different planet. Most people see beaches as a bright yellow and blue scene that always contrasts harshly. The gray and white colors show a completely different perspective of our worlds beaches and shows that beauty isn't always bright and colorful. The monochromatic image is so easy on the eyes and relaxing to look at and still surprised that this is California.

I am really drawn to your photograph of the pebble beach in California that you took. The soft, almost neutral colors give off a sense of calm and relaxation, which I really like. I think the photo has a lot of depth and detail, too, because it's not just a plain beach; it has seaweed on it, which adds more to the image. The colors are almost monochromatic looking, with the diffused light you took the photo with, which makes me feel peaceful when I look at it. Overall, I think you did a good job with the lighting and colors in your photo. - Amelia Orndorff

Photo Critique:

Why does this photo stand out?

I’m drawn to this image because of how the dark trees pop against the bright blue sky. The contrast is strong and eye-catching. It feels peaceful and calm, like a quiet moment before night.

What is the most interesting part?

The deep blue sky is the main focus. The way the trees frame the sky makes the photo feel balanced and well-composed. The shapes of the trees create a nice border that keeps the viewer’s eyes in the center.

Is the photo focused well?

Yes, the focus is clear. The trees are sharp and defined, which works well since they’re in silhouette. There’s no need for background detail because the contrast does…
